About Deseret Memorial Mortuary
From humble beginnings in the Dr. George Weiler home on Seventh South, Deseret Memorial Mortuary has been serving the public since 1925. Deseret offers a nostalgic feel and our spacious main foyer welcomes all who enter with the warm appeal of a gracious home.
Walking into the grand building is walking through the past. The building is permeated with history; it drapes over you and hugs you like a grandparent's worn winter coat. You can taste the dusty, venerable history and breathe it in like Jazz-era perfume.
An unexpected outcropping of copper, tan, and white stone juts out from next to the staircase to create a waterfall. Water gurgles and tumbles down rocks and splashes into several pools. A bank of snowy windows lets in a shimmer of light. Go ahead and throw a coin into the fountain for old time's sake.
Walk up the stately wide stairway into the upper gathering area and take note of the great arched doorways and leaded-glass windows. Alcoves, here and there, hold ornate statues and paintings. A large circular window looks onto the beautifully landscaped grounds.
Step into the large chapel. The old floorboards creak and tell the stories of countless services past. A beautiful glass chandelier greets you as you walk in. Old wooden pews face a beautiful bas-relief sculpture entitled "The Welcome," designed and donated by local artist T.S. Knophus. It depicts a man being welcomed by Jesus Christ. A second, smaller chapel is available for smaller gatherings. The coziness and softness of the room create a warm setting.
In the viewing room, light from decorative glass chandeliers cascades off the ornate molding. It is like being in the parlor rooms of a proud Southern manor.
A visit to Deseret is a visit into the past. We invite you to come and see what this great old building has to offer.
